Earlier this week, I stood in the sanctuary of Historic St. George’s United Methodist Church in Philadelphia, PA. Founded in the 1760s, St. George’s is the oldest Methodist Church in continuous use in the United States. It stands blocks from Independence Hall where our country’s liberty was first proclaimed. But like our country, the history of this famous Philadelphia church contains moments in which life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are noticeably missing. In 1787, Richard Allen, one of the black congregants of St George’s came down from the balcony to pray at the chancel rail. The ushers interrupted his prayer and told him that he must return to the balcony with the other black congregants. It was a watershed moment in the history of the church as Allen and all of the other black congregants rose as one and left. From that divisive incident, the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church was formed. I wish that I could point to that moment 222 years ago and proclaim that division in the church has since been eradicated, but that simply isn’t true. Today, churches of all faiths are split over political and theological ideologies. The United Methodist Church is on the verge of a split over the issue of LGBTQI+ inclusion – a debate that has been festering in the church for close to 50 years. Yesterday, the Vatican issued a decree that marginalized transgender persons and further drove away members of and allies of the LGBTQI+ community. I believe that the last thing a church should do is drive people away. Any claim that questions the humanity of others is, in no uncertain terms, contrary to God. The congregations of Kingwood United Methodist Church and Frenchtown United Methodist Church stand proudly and publicly with our brothers and sisters in the LGBTQI+ community. We believe that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, precious in the sight of God. We believe that the space we occupy is made better by your presence and we delight in you. Friends, if your church or spiritual beliefs is predicated upon the drawing of lines between yourself and others, then I invite you into a deeper relationship with God in which we are strengthened to see all people as God’s children. In Genesis 1, God created male and female. Also in Genesis 1, God also creates day and night, land and sea. And yet, some of the most beautiful parts of creation are where these binary lines are blurred: beaches, marshes, rivers, and lakes, the sunrise and the sunset – among many many examples. No one denies that which lie in-between and outside the binaries in the other parts of Genesis 1. We don’t insist that they fit the binary categories; we celebrate them as they are! From that perspective, I believe that we must naturally do the same with gender. On Sunday morning June 16, Frenchtown United Methodist Church and Kingwood United Methodist Church will conclude the worship series entitled ”Catch Your Breath” as we look at the divisions that we form when we try to separate ourselves from God’s grace and love. Be united to Christ; be united to your community, one to another, as we delight in God’s indivisible love. www.kingwood-frenchtownumchurches.com/ #indivisible #Frenchtown #KingwoodNJ #Church #AllAreWelcome

This is Bob. Say hello to Bob. Bob is hard at work today because (he thinks) he's going to be the guest preacher on Sunday at Frenchtown United Methodist Church and Kingwood United Methodist Church. Bob isn't actually preaching (he's too much of a ham!), but he is helping to plan our Holy Humor Sunday service. Last week on Easter, we saw that Jesus pulled the greatest prank ever done - everyone thought he was dead and he fooled them all. So this Sunday in Kingwood and Frenchtown, (with Bob's help), we're going to have some fun and a laugh or two. Join us for the holy hilarity. 9:00 in Kingwood or 11:00 in Frenchtown. Who knows... maybe Bob will let you pull on his leg and make him into pulled pork. http://kingwood-frenchtownumchurches.com/
